History of The Department and The Programme The Department of Vocational and Technical Education was set up in 1983 to train students to teach Home Science in Senior Secondary schools. It started with one undergraduate programme in Home Science and subsequently, the programme was changed to Bachelor of Education in Home Economics with specialisations in Foods and Nutrition and Clothing and Textiles. The department run the Bachelor of Education in Home Economics programmed until 2015 when the head of department decided to add other undergraduate TVET programmes to their programmes. Some people were contracted to develop three new undergraduate programmes for the department namely, Bachelor of Education in Communication Design, Bachelor of Fine Art Education with specialisations in Painting or sculpture and Bachelor of Science in Construction Technology Education.
Finally, all the three new undergraduate programmes were accredited by GTEC in October, 2021. The Bachelor of Education in Communication Design programme was hosted in the Communication Design unit of the department of Vocational and Technical Education and has been run till date. The programme started with a student enrolment of 18, and currently, the first-year students are around 99, with a total student enrolment of 254. The student population is mainly male dominated, but the female numbers have increased over the years. The programme has organised several exhibitions to showcase student capabilities and had several students doing internships with some major design firms across the nation. Since the implementation of the programme, no major review has been done in the programme.
