Programme Aim

Aim(s)

● Provide students with an understanding of the scientific principles and practical application of imaging modalities, and to assist students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills of how to apply them in practice. ● Train and give carrier opportunity for students to learn the application of ultrasound in the clinical field and how to confidently and accurately generate diagnostic images thereof. ● Equip the student with the knowledge and skills to actively participate in the provision of quality health care delivery in Ghana. ● Provide sound knowledge base in medical imaging, to enable the student to use this knowledge, and integrate underlying theoretical concepts to develop their professional practice and skills. ● Show enough flexibility for the students to understand the various disciplines of imaging and to encourage private entrepreneurship in diagnostic medical sonographic imaging in general. ● Provide the foundation for students to pursue further and higher academic challenges (M.Sc.).

Objective(s)

● Demonstrate adequate knowledge and understanding of the theoretical foundation of diagnostic medical imaging. ● Show competence and to generate sonographic images and to practice in the appropriate areas of specialization. ● Apply theoretical concepts of medical imaging safely in their professional practice. ● Easily show the ability to integrate current clinical developments into professional practice, ● Demonstrate the skills to manage complicated radiologic procedures and exhibit very high organizational ability. ● Confidently apply acquired knowledge in entrepreneurship leading to the setting up of their private diagnostic centers.

The Department of Imaging Technology and Sonography became part of the School of Allied Health Sciences in 2016. Professor Philip Nartey Gorleku, a renowned Radiologist, was the first Head of Department. Since then, the Department has contributed immensely towards the application of knowledge in diagnostic medical imaging to serve our fellow citizens and country. The Department is accredited to run two (2) B.Sc. programmes, namely: B.Sc. Diagnostic Imaging Technology (Radiography). B.Sc. Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Sonography). These programmes received first accreditation in August, 2020.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science (Grade D or better for SSSCE candidates and Grade C6 or better for WASSCE candidates).

In addition, applicants must have passes in Chemistry, Physics, and any one of the following elective subjects: Biology or Elective Mathematics.
