The Department was established in 1962 and is located in the Science Building Complex.
Over the years we have succeeded in realizing our sole mission of producing high caliber and competitive physicists who not only contribute immensely to the development of the country but also fit very well into the global physics community.
The current trend in technological development has brought meteorology and atmospheric physics to the forefront of science. Global warming and ecological modifications of our natural environment is as a result of human activity. There is, therefore, a need to understand and predict the weather for various applications in industry, agriculture, and aviation amongst others.
In Ghana currently, there are only two universities offering courses in meteorology: the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST). As far back as 1985, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), of which Ghana is a member, had been urging member countries to embark on massive training of personnel in meteorology and atmospheric physics, even if it is only to apply the knowledge to improve food production. The climate change of recent years has justified the call.
In view of the above, the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) and the Department of Physics-UCC came in to address this knowledge-manpower gap. These two institutions (UCC & GMet) therefore went into agreement to have the programme started and students have been going for internships at GMet since the program started in 2012. GMet and its experienced personnel in teaching and research have supported the operational meteorology teaching needs of the Department.
