Programme Aim

Aim(s)

The programme aims to produce law graduates equipped with high-level knowledge, ethics and leadership skills to seek justice, provide professional services and maintain the standards of the Bar.

Programme Objectives

Objective(s)

The objectives of the programme are to: i. develop a student-centred approach to learning with a focus on critical thinking and analysis as well as practical research, writing, advocacy and interpretive skills.

ii. equip students with a specialized legal training (e.g. arbitration, maritime law, space law, media law for journalists, paralegal services).

iii. equip students with legal research skills and foster dialogue and dissemination of research through publications, our Jurists’ Confab, guest lectures and Visiting Fellowships from overseas scholars, legal practitioners and judges.

iv. develop the students’ ethical knowledge and sense of community and pro bono services through our legal clinic and other grassroots initiatives.

Accreditation of the Faculty of Law at University of Cape Coast was formally granted to the University by the then National Accreditation Board in April, 2013 to run a three-year post first degree Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme from Levels 200 to 400. Following re-accreditation in 2016, the Faculty of Law, UCC, commenced a four-year first-degree Bachelor of Laws degree programme in 2018 for students with Senior High School (SHS) certificate from Levels 100 to 400. These Senior High School students join newly admitted post-first degree students in their second year of progression at Level 200 and complete the programme at Level 400 with their post-first degree compatriots who started their three-year programme at Level 200.

From an initial enrolment of 60 students in the first year of the programme in 2013 the programme has seen an increase to about 100 students being admitted to the first year in 2022/23 academic year. The Faculty of Law at UCC became the first Faculty to arrange student clerkship with the judicial service and revived the dormant Bar, Bench, Faculty Conference as the Jurists’ Confab which is aimed at fostering dialogue between the Bar, Bench and Academia in respect of socio-legal issues.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science or Social Studies (Grade D or better for SSSCE candidates, and Grade C6 or better for WASSCE candidates). In addition, applicants must have passes in three (3) elective and/or core subjects.

Applicants will also be required to pass an interview.

Graduation Requirements

  1. Course Requirements: A candidate for the BCom (Accounting) degree must pass all courses taken, meet Inter-Faculty course requirements.
  2. Credit Requirements: A candidate must accumulate a minimum of 140 credits (including Advance Credits).
  3. Additional Requirements: The candidate must attain a minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 1.0. In addition, the candidate must have settled financial and other obligations to the university.

Employment Prospects of Graduates

Our Alumni have found success in private or in-house legal practice, the Judicial Service, the Attorney General’s Office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Parliament. Many have also found success in the corporate world, NGOs and have gone on to undertake Master’s and Doctoral programmes locally and in countries such as Switzerland, South Africa, and the USA.
