The BSc Biochemistry programme at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) originated as a unit within the School of Agriculture, where it provided foundational training in biochemistry. In response to global developments in the life sciences and growing demand for specialized expertise, it was established as a full department in the 2003/2004 academic year under the School of Biological Sciences, following the approval of a dedicated curriculum by the University. Since its establishment, the programme has undergone continuous development through regular curriculum reviews to keep pace with scientific advancements. Now, the programme adopts an interdisciplinary approach, equipping students with a broad-based education and practical skills applicable across a range of scientific and professional fields. The department has also strengthened its laboratory and research training, paving the way for the introduction of postgraduate programmes (MSc, MPhil and PhD). Currently, the BSc Biochemistry programme serves as a cornerstone for several allied bioscience disciplines within the University. Graduates of the programme are well-prepared for careers in research, healthcare, industry, and academia. The department remains committed to advancing scientific training, supporting national development through biotechnology and innovation, and fostering international collaboration and research excellence.
