Vision To create an efficient globally competitive Department that attract student’s world-wide in solving environmental challenges of our time Mission • Creating an environment for student’s engagement and faculty contributing to the intellectual growth of our students and solving environmental problems of our communities that reflects national nature. • Building upon the existing foundation in expanding Environmental Science programs to other Department within the University. • Putting Environmental Science into the national domain and eventually becoming a School in attracting students within the West Africa Sub-Region. • Liaising the Department of Environmental Science with respective industries, state institutions and professional bodies for transfer of knowledge and technology.

Programme Objectives

Objective(s)

The Department’s Objectives are to: • Strengthen human capacity to address environmental issues at the local, national and international levels. • Enhance scientific understanding of environmental issues by supporting credible problem-focused research. • Facilitate and expand access to environmental information. • Assist decision-makers by providing comprehensive assessments of current environmental knowledge and its implications.

The Department of Environmental Science was established in 2002 as a result of restructuring of the now defunct Departments of Zoology and Botany. The courses of the Department undergo constant review to make them more relevant to national developmental and international needs. The competencies of the faculty members have competencies to solve environmental problems related ecosystem, ground/source to water, soil and atmospheric pollution, clean energy and the environment. We are student friendly Department where educational, emotional and social problems of students are catered for through effective guidance and counselling, and referrals where professional engagement is deemed fit. Our style in what we do is embracing, interdisciplinary approach, innovative teaching and mentoring our students. We strive to engage our students and promote a culture of belonging in order to let them grow in engaging future with passion for the environment.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must have passes in Core English, Core Mathematics, and Integrated Science (Grade D or better for SSSCE candidates and Grade C6 or better for WASSCE candidates).

In addition, applicants must have passes in three elective subjects chosen from Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Elective Mathematics.

Employment Prospects of Graduates

There is an existing gap in expertise and the programme is expected to bridge the gap: Local Solutions for Energy Access, Appliances for Off-Grid Communities and Mini-grids Planning and Design etc. Graduates of the MPhil (Clean Energy and Environment) programme will also be equipped with knowledge and skills that will help address the inadequacies in the energy sector. The programme will allow the University to attract high-caliber and motivated students and staff as envisaged under Theme 4 of UCC’s Corporate Strategic Plan 2023 – 2027.
