MSc Data Science and Economic Policy

How to Apply

About This Programme

The MSc Data Science and Economic Policy programme is firmly aligned with Ghana's long-term development agenda, including the specific objectives outlined in the Ghana@100 framework - namely fostering inclusive economic growth, strengthening institutional accountability, bridging the digital divide, and advancing good governance. These objectives require the integration of high-level data science techniques (such as machine learning, big data analytics, and predictive modelling) with economic policy design and evaluation. The country therefore requires individuals with skills in advanced data analytics and management, machine learning and predictive modelling, policy impact assessment and monitoring and evaluation, and data-driven governance and institutional accountability. These skills are critical if the country is to achieve robust, inclusive and sustainable growth, supporting the national ambition of attaining high-income status by 2057. The MSc Data Science and Economic Policy programme runs over one year.

Currently, no programme in Ghana integrates the tools of data science with economic policymaking to produce professionals capable of formulating data-driven policies for both government and private sector operators. Existing offerings - such as the MPhil in Economics, MPhil Economic Policy Modelling, MSc Data Science, and MSc Business Analytics - tend to focus exclusively on either economics or analytics. In contrast, the MSc in Data Science and Economic Policy uniquely bridges these fields, equipping students with advanced expertise in big data analytics, machine learning, and econometrics while also providing deep policy and economic insights.

This dual emphasis addresses critical skills gaps that traditional programmes do not cover. Unlike programmes that concentrate solely on theoretical frameworks and policy analysis, this MSc trains students in cutting-edge techniques such as high-volume data processing, real-time data visualisation, and predictive modelling to inform policy decisions. It also goes beyond the scope of standalone MSc Data Science or MSc Business Analytics degrees by offering comprehensive macroeconomic and microeconomic policy simulation methods, impact evaluation strategies, and context-specific policy design rooted in Ghana's development priorities. Graduates are thus uniquely prepared to tackle complex socio-economic challenges through holistic, data-driven solutions that integrate rigorous analytical methods with a clear understanding of policy processes.

The programme aligns with the University's core mandate of teaching, research, and extension services by equipping students with advanced data analysis and economic policy skills through rigorous coursework. It also supports the University's mission of providing comprehensive, liberal and professional programmes that challenge learners to be creative, innovative and responsible citizens, by challenging students to develop innovative, data-driven policy solutions that address developmental challenges in Ghana and across Sub-Saharan Africa.

Programme Aim

Aim(s)

To produce skilled professionals who can integrate advanced data analysis with economic frameworks to address real-world development challenges and inform evidence-based policy decisions.

Programme Objectives

Objective(s)

Equip students with advanced quantitative, computational, and econometric skills to analyse and interpret large-scale economic and policy datasets.

The Department of Data Science and Economic Policy was carved out of the Department of Economics (now the School of Economics) in August 2018 in order to carry out research in the area of economic policy-making within Ghana and beyond, through fostering quality policy-relevant economic research disseminated widely to decision makers in both the public and the private sectors of the economy. The Department also pursues the objective of increasing accessibility to high-quality data to enhance socio-economic research in Ghana.

The MSc Data Science and Economic Policy programme was developed in close collaboration with the Institute of ICT Professionals Ghana (IIPG), Azubi-Africa, and DigCap Ghana - all highly regarded institutions in the ICT and data science space. On 16th November 2022 the Department convened an industry-academia dialogue in Accra, bringing together key stakeholders from marketing, banking, insurance, and other major sectors to discuss and refine the programme.
