The objectives of the B.Sc. Tourism Management programme are to: • provide students with the operational and managerial knowledge of tourism operations; • develop the analytical, problem solving and decision-making skills of students • build the capacity of students to innovate and undertake entrepreneurial initiatives in the tourism industry; and

The B.Sc. Tourism Management Programme is an offshoot of the B.Sc. Tourism (General) programme, which ran for about 13 years from 1996 in the then Department of Geography and Tourism. In 2004, the Faculty of Social Sciences began a process of restructuring its programmes and the Department of Geography and Tourism had its proposal to create three different departments approved in February 2008. This development paved the way for the new Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management to offer separate and more specialized programmes. Hence in 2009 accreditation was sought and duly granted for the mounting of the B.Sc. Hospitality Management and B.Sc. Tourism Management programmes. Since then, both programmes have been reaccredited in 2012 and 2017 and have been running for the past 11 years.

The B.Sc. Tourism Management Programme was developed out of two key considerations. First, was the consistent complaint from industry operatives about the inability of our graduates to operate functionally in the industry, and flowing from the second, the need to provide students are more focused and career-oriented training in the tourism field. The Programme started running in 2009 with 38 students (20 male and 18 female). It currently has an average of 35 students with the majority (about 70%) being male.

In line with Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) reaccreditation of academic programmes requirements, the department decided to revise the curriculum to incorporate contemporary courses and skills required of a 21st century hospitality graduate. To achieve this, a curriculum review committee was tasked with the revision. Afterwards, a curriculum review engagement was organised with the various stakeholders in the hospitality sector to gather their feedback and inputs to guarantee that the curriculum captured the required knowledge, attitude and competencies required by the practitioners. Based on the recommendations of the stakeholders and the need to produce competitive graduates for the 21st century tourism market, some of the existing courses including Thematic Geography, Tourist Psychology, Business Environment of Hospitality and Tourism, Concepts and Theories of Tourism Development and Transport Management were taken out. In their place, new courses were introduced into the curriculum. Amongst the new courses introduced include Consumer Behaviour in Hospitality and Tourism, Innovation and Entrepreneurship I, Innovation and Entrepreneurship II, Digital Marketing in Hospitality and Tourism, Visitor Bureau Management, Travel Agency Operations, Airline Operations Management, Travel Communication, Yield Management, and Transferrable Skills in Hospitality.
